I’m the Editor-in-Chief at Guinness World Records and as I celebrate my tenth year of working here I continue to be amazed at our readers’ enthusiasm, passion and dedication to record-breaking. I hope you and your children will enjoy the new Guinness World Records 2013 Edition, which we have been putting together over the last 12 months. During this time, our Records Management Team has processed more than 45,000 claims and enquiries – an enormous task.

The first thing you’ll notice is our exciting new cover – a vibrant, kinetic foil design inspired by the theme of scientific investigation and discovery. For the first time ever, we’ve combined lens technology with diamond etching to create a cover that you won’t see anywhere else on the bookshelves.

Inside the book, there’s an all-new design that’s been crafted to be particularly easy to read for reluctant readers. I’ve had some heart-warming feedback from parents of children with reading issues who say that the Guinness World Records book is the one title their children enjoy going back to, time after time. “I keep seeing my boy with the book, month after month,” said one mother in Canada. “He won’t read anything else!” Guinness World Records is clearly not just for Christmas!

 As ever, about 75% of the records inside are new or updated. And there are plenty of new features unique to this year’s edition:

  • Augmented Reality ­– we’re very excited to give readers with a smartphone or tablet device the chance to see record holders in 3D, virtually leaping off the page and coming to life with our free “Seeit3D” app (available on Apple iOS and Android)!
  • World Tour – a whirlwind trip around the world, taking in the most extraordinary record-breaking sites and attractions on each continent.
  • Snap Shot – Guinness World Records Picture Editor Michael Whitty unveils the very best in record-breaking photography in a series of never-seen-before images; we’ve also given him the chance to reveal some behind-the-scenes stories from his worldwide travels.
  • We’ve asked our science consultants to tackle the subject of climate change and the future of our planet, and dedicated an entire chapter to the good, the bad and the ugly aspects of our treatment of the environment.
  • New spread topics include social media, sharks (can you believe that we’ve never done a spread dedicated to sharks?!), sci-fi science (comparing movie science-fiction to science reality), airports, Star Wars, living in space (can you name the first man to vomit in space?) and an entire spread on sweets and candies.


The book is as popular as ever, of course, and there are more ways than ever to engage with Guinness World Records. Our Facebook page received its one-millionth user in April 2012, and the GWR YouTube channel has now been visited by more than 150 million people. On TV, we’ve had major new shows premiere across the globe, drawing in viewership figures in the region of 750 million in one year. It’s all proof, were it needed, that there’s no end to the fascination with record-breaking.
