downloadHello Tesco Books Blog readers,

The two loves of my life are small, grey and white, and furry. They are my two cats, Jacob and Lily. They look very beautiful and distinguished but they’re not aristocratic pedigree cats. I found them both when they were rescued kittens at the wonderful Battersea Dog and Cat Home.

I was very impressed by Battersea and the love and care they give to abandoned animals, in many cases nursing them back to health and then making every effort to rehome them with the right family. I leapt at the chance of becoming involved with this splendid organisation, and now I’m proud to say I’m one of their Ambassadors (along with Paul O’Grady, David Gandy and Amanda Holden).

I took great delight in compiling a special anthology of cat and dog tales, with part of the proceeds going to Battersea. I’ve called it Paws and Whiskers and hopefully it will appeal to any animal-loving child from seven to fourteen. I’ve written a brand new story myself about a girl called Leonie who’s desperate to have a cat of her own, especially when it will help her join the ‘Pet Girls’ club at her new school. There’s also a children’s author in this story called Jenna Williams who bears more than a slight resemblance to me!

I had great fun writing this story – but I particularly enjoyed choosing all my favourite animal stories from a host of different authors. I’ve tried to find something to please everyone. I’ve included favourite classics like Kipling’s cat that walked by himself and Orlando the magnificent marmalade cat and those delightful hundred and one dalmatians. I’ve chosen popular much-loved authors like Michael Morpurgo and Jean Ure and Anne Fine. I’ve selected extracts from very modern authors like Patrick Ness and S.F. Said. I’ve included surprising adult authors like Anne Tyler and Ian McEwan. I haven’t done a head and leg count, but I’ve tried to include as many whiskers and paws as possible!

I also have a Pet’s Corner section in the middle of the book where I’ve asked all my children’s author friends to write me a little piece about their pets. I think this is probably my favourite section. If you want to find out about Philip Pullman’s gloriously untrainable pugs, or the day Malorie Blackman’s German shepherd was terrorised by a Yorkshire terrier than you’ll have to read it! I couldn’t resist writing many little anecdotes about my Jacob and Lily throughout the book.

My friend Nick Sharratt has had a wonderful time splendidly illustrating all these cats and dogs. He’s even drawn a portrait of me holding Jacob and Lily. I love the way Nick draws cats – but I love his dogs too.  I think it’s about time I went back to Battersea and looked for a little dog …

Carole Matthews joined us on the blog a few weeks ago to tell us about her book, Calling Mrs Christmas, the perfect read for this time of year! And to celebrate its publication we gave you the chance to win £500 Tesco vouchers, a helpful prize in the run up to Christmas! To win, Carole wanted you to tell us what your favourite thing about Christmas is, and with just under 3000 comments Carole has a lot of reading to do – and had a tough time choosing a winner!  But she got there in the end and Angela is our lucky winner this time around, congratulations!

Now we’ve all experienced a cooking disaster or two, but Trisha Ashley really showed us up when she told us about the challenge she took on when she cooked Christmas dinner in an unfamiliar kitchen in Caribbean temperatures. What a brave lady! Going with the theme of cooking disasters, we asked you to tell us about your Christmas cooking disasters for the chance to win a mini hamper and a copy of Trish’s Wish Upon a Star! We thought we’d had some tough battles with the oven, but so many of you outdid us. And our winners were no exception, well done to Jenny, Caroline, Christine, Michelle and Lorna!

Cycling pro, Mark Cavendish, stopped by in November to tell us about his greatest fear and how he overcame it. We all have fears and facing them is half the battle, but that’s easier said than done. With that said, Mark wanted to know exactly what fear you’ve managed to overcome, and to say he was impressed with the number of you who have conquered your fears head on is an understatement. But we can of course only choose one winner, so congratulations Lou, we hope you love your Jersey from Mark’s cycling team and your signed copy of his book, At Speed!

Next the lovely and talented Jenny Colgan stopped by to tell us about her new book, Christmas at Rosie Hopkins’ Sweet Shop, as well as giving you a chance to get your mitts on a Tiffany & Co. voucher! Now that’s one fantastic prize, and to be in with a chance of winning you had to reveal your gifting blunders by telling us all about the worst gift you’ve ever given someone, we were shocked at how terrible some of them were! But Stephanie really topped the list when she caused her relative to have an allergic reaction to her nut filled truffles! Stephanie we hope you have fun spending your Tiffany & Co. voucher!

Then at the start of November Jeff Kinney, author of the fantastic series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid popped by to say ‘hi’ and tell us about the latest addition to the series, Hard Luck. The beloved character Greg Heffley is having as tough time when his best friend finds himself a girlfriend, so he turns his life over to fate, horoscopes and fortune cookies and finally a magic 8 ball. To tap into the fortune and decision-making theme of Hard Luck we gave you the chance to win your very own magic 8 ball, you simply had to tell us what your lucky charm is. Well done to Susan, Claire, Ann, Jason and Hayley, don’t let your signed magic 8 ball make too many decision for you!

Wimbledon champion and Olympic medalist Andy Murray joined us a few weeks ago to talk about his autobiography, My Road To Wimbledon Glory and gave you the chance to win a copy of his book, plus adidas goodies, including a signed shirt and trainers. To win we wanted you to tell us where you were the magical moment Andy Murray won Wimbledon. Some of you were there at the match, whilst the rest of us were either watching it at home leaping from our sofas, or in a pub surround by friends and family cheering the sportsman on. And our winner was part of that majority, Lynsey S was at home ‘glued to her TV whilst it was blistering beautiful sunshine in Scotland, the only day in 2013!’. We hope you enjoy your prize Lynsey!

A second sportsman paid us a visit at the end of November, rugby pro Matt Dawson. To celebrate his extensive career, Matt put pen to paper and published an autobiography, sharing wonderful anecdotes and epic stories of triumph and despair with his fans. To celebrate his book with the Tesco Books Blog readers he gave you the chance to win a signed copy of his book and shirt, and to win you had to tell us which BBC show Matt captains a team on. The answer of course was, A Question of Sport, and our lucky winner is Richard K – enjoy :)

Congrats to all of our December winners. If you didn’t win this month, tune in over the festive season and the new year for lots more chances to win! And be sure to  join us on Twitter for fun giveaways and quizzes over the festive period!

The Snowman™ tells the story of a magical friendship between a little boy and the snowman he makes in his garden.  Based on Raymond Briggs’s best-selling children’s book published by Puffin in 1982, it has been a firm favourite with parents and children worldwide for 30 years.

In 1982, The Snowman was adapted for television and has gone on to become a national institution for children, broadcasting on Channel 4 every Christmas since it was first made and in numerous countries around the world.

Last year Raymond Briggs gave his blessing to the creation of a sequel and The Snowman and The Snowdog was made by the same team at Lupus Films who created the original 30 years earlier.  Using the same traditional hand-drawn techniques, The Snowman and The Snowdog is a tribute to The Snowman but moves the story on, reuniting viewers with the world’s favourite Christmas character, this time in a brand new adventure with a new set of friends.

Screen Shot 2013-11-29 at 14.52.11A total number of 76 illustrators and artists all worked by hand to draw and colour over 17,000 frames which made up the film.  Between them they got through approximately 200,000 sheets of paper and 5,000 pencils!  The film took a total of 12 months to make before being broadcast by Channel 4 on Christmas Eve, 2012.

This year, for the very first time, the adorable animation is transported from screen back to print, with a stunning new The Snowman and the Snowdog book from Puffin.

Join us on Twitter next Monday for a chance to win Snowman goodies!

The October Half Term seems likes such a long time ago now, but Hugless Douglas is still reeling over the incredible time he had in Peru, home of his idol, Paddington Bear.

He set off at the start of Half Term on the train to Heathrow Airport, made his way through security in record time, had a quick scoot around Duty Free (a bear has to look his best at all times, and discount toiletries are the best), and was relaxed and ready for his flight to Peru.

He hopped off the plane in Peru and was ready to embark on his week-long adventure. Here’s how it went….

First Hugless Douglas visited a small city named Cusco. He tells us it’s beautiful, and we believe him, look at the photographic evidence…

Hugless Douglas has been on many an adventure this summer, what a lucky bear he is. He’s gone from scorching climates in sunny Greece to riding The Dodgems and The Waltzer in the English sunshine on Brighton Pier.

Now when we say English summer most people think cloudy skies and a slight chill in the air, but not this summer, oh no, we’ve had a balmy two months of glorious sunshine in the South East and across most of the country. It was hotter than Barbados at one stage! So with that in mind Hugless Douglas set off to Brighton for the day, he strolled along the pebble beach, took in the sights from the top of the Brighton Wheel and took on every ride on the Pier.

Next he took to the sandy beaches of Bulgaria, dabbling in a little jet skiing, water park fun and poolside frolics. This bear certainly knows how to holiday in style!

Hugless Douglas arrived back in the UK and headed straight for the capital. His day in the big city included stops at the beautiful Butterfly World, Buckingham Palace for a cuppa with the Queen, Sea Life London Aquarium, and after all of that, a snooze in Hyde Park was a must!

I’ve written three books about a feisty red-haired Victorian foundling called Hetty Feather. I love writing about her – and wonderfully, she’s become very popular with all the children who read my books. In fact she’s now become most people’s favourite Jacqueline Wilson character – and a certain Miss T Beaker is very put out about this!

In the third book about Hetty, Emerald Star, there’s a brand new character, Diamond, a golden haired little waif who is part of an acrobatic act at the circus. I liked writing about her so much that I couldn’t stop thinking of her long after I’d finished the book. I wondered how she’d come to be part of the circus.  I knew she’d love Hetty. I wanted to know more about their life together travelling around the country with the circus.

So I started writing Diamond’s story.  Poor little Diamond has never been to school and can barely read and write, so I decided she could dictate her story to Hetty. It was almost as if she was really dictating direct to me. I didn’t plan out the story at all.  I simply picked up my pen every morning and Diamond spoke inside my head. I just copied down her words!

It was very interesting writing about Hetty from her point of view, and revisiting some of my favourite characters from the first three books. Madame Adeline is very motherly towards Diamond! There are also many new characters too – Mr Marvel and his troupe of performing monkeys and Cowboy Jonny and Lucky Heather with their wonderfully trained horses and dogs.

I think the story shows just how exciting a Victorian circus can be – but it’s also a dangerous and worrying place too, especially for a child. Poor Diamond has to cope with many terrible things – but I promise you there’s a happy ending.

I feel I should act like Hetty as the circus ringmaster and say Roll up, all my special readers! Please look inside my silver sparkly book and delight in Diamond’s story!
